What we store, what we measure, and what we never do.
What stays in your browser
Some features remember your choices in your own browser, using local storage. This information never leaves your device and we cannot see it:
- your theme (light or dark) and time zone preference
- the topics and companies you follow
- the stories you read recently, so they can be opened offline
- when you last visited, so new stories can be marked
Clearing your browser's site data removes all of it.
What we measure
If analytics are switched on, we count page views and a few actions, such as clicks on source links, searches, and newsletter signups, to learn whether readers use the evidence we provide. We do this without cookies, without recording sessions, and without building a profile of you. We do not sell or share this data.
Newsletter
If you subscribe, your email address is held by our newsletter provider only to send you the newsletter. Every issue has an unsubscribe link.
Listen
The Listen button uses your device's built-in speech feature. The text is read by your own browser; nothing is sent to us.
Ask the archive
Questions you type into Ask the archive are answered in your browser from a file of passages from our stories. Your question is not sent to us. If analytics are on, we count that a question was asked and how many words it had, not what it said.
