High-risk AI system

Under the EU AI Act, an AI system used in an area where errors could seriously affect health, safety, or rights, which must meet strict requirements.

The EU AI Act classifies some AI systems as high-risk. These include AI that is a safety component of products already regulated, such as medical devices or machinery, and AI used in listed areas such as hiring, education, access to credit and public services, law enforcement, migration, and the administration of justice.

High-risk systems must meet requirements on risk management, data quality, documentation, human oversight, accuracy, and security, and go through a conformity assessment before being sold or used. Organizations that deploy them also have duties.

Other laws use "high-risk" differently. A US state law or a company policy that calls something high-risk may mean something narrower or broader than the EU definition.
