Job displacement
Workers losing their jobs or job tasks because the work is automated or reorganized.
Displacement means workers are pushed out of jobs or roles, for example when a company replaces some tasks or positions with AI or other automation. Economists distinguish it from changes in hiring, wages, or the mix of tasks within a job.
Measuring AI-driven displacement is difficult. Layoff announcements may cite AI for reasons that include cost cutting or restructuring, and new jobs created elsewhere are harder to count than jobs lost.
A company saying it cut jobs "because of AI" is a claim about its own motives. Look for independent data, such as employment surveys over time, to judge broader effects.
