What happened

  • On 20 October, SpaceX reported third-quarter revenue of $14.6 billion, up 161% from a year earlier.
  • Its Super Intelligence segment, previously reported as Artificial Intelligence, had revenue of $7.56 billion, up from $813 million a year earlier.
  • The segment reported $431 million in operating income, after $1.2 billion of stock-based compensation tied to the Cursor acquisition.
  • The Connectivity (Starlink) segment earned $2.37 billion of the company's $2.79 billion operating income.

Why it matters

SpaceX is one of the few public companies that reports AI model and compute revenue as its own segment, so its filings give a rare public view of what a frontier AI business earns.

What is confirmed and what is claimed

Confirmed

  • Total third-quarter revenue was about $14.6 billion, up 161% year on year (SpaceX results; reported by Quartz and Fortune). 12
  • Super Intelligence segment revenue was $7.56 billion and operating income was $431 million (SpaceX results; reported by Fortune and Unite.AI). 14
  • The Cursor acquisition closed on 14 August and contributed $608 million of revenue through 30 September (SpaceX earnings call, as reported by Yahoo Finance).

Claimed, not independently verified

  • SpaceX says segment operating income would have been about $1.6 billion excluding the Cursor-related stock compensation; that is a company-adjusted figure.
  • Reports say the segment's compute customers include Anthropic and Google, alongside Grok and X; we have not seen contract terms.

Because SpaceX is now a public company, its AI business, built around xAI and the coding tool Cursor, reports results each quarter. In the third quarter, the AI segment was the company's largest by revenue and swung to an operating profit, after a reported operating loss of $1.26 billion in the second quarter.

Context

The jump from $813 million to $7.56 billion in segment revenue is mostly the effect of combining businesses rather than one product growing ninefold. Cursor alone contributed $608 million in about six weeks of ownership. Year-on-year comparisons across a merger can make growth look larger than it is, so the next few quarters, with the acquisitions fully included, will be a cleaner test.

Profit tells a different story from revenue. Starlink still produced most of SpaceX's operating income, and the AI segment's $431 million profit came after a large one-off stock compensation charge. SpaceX's own "excluding" figure is an adjusted number chosen by the company. Our guide to reading AI funding and revenue claims explains why adjusted and reported figures can differ.

The results also showed that part of the segment's business is renting computing capacity to other AI developers, a sign of how tight demand for AI chips and data centers remains. Chip and server stocks rose on the report.

What to watch

  • Whether the AI segment stays profitable without one-off items.
  • How much of its revenue depends on a few large compute customers.
  • Big cloud companies' results in the coming weeks, which will show whether AI spending is still rising.

What we don’t know yet

  • How much of the segment's growth is organic rather than the result of combining xAI and acquiring Cursor.
  • How much revenue comes from renting compute to other AI companies versus selling its own models and products.
  • Adjusted earnings per share; outlets reported different figures.
